FREDERICK, MD — The final game of the OFBG season delivered everything a championship should—momentum swings, highlight goals, tight defense, and at least one chirp that will live rent-free in group chat forever.
The Penguins struck first, with Eric Rigsby burying a Costantino feed less than a minute into the game. It looked like the top seed might dictate pace early... but the Oilers had other plans. Twenty-three seconds later, Bennett Blanton tied it up with a flash of goal-scorer's instinct, and then Bryce McGuire gave the Oilers the lead just over a minute later off a slick setup from Michael Bernard.
The second period was tight, physical, and low-scoring—until Terry Yamaguchi leveled things on a nice play with Thomas and MacDonald, tying it 2–2 and setting up a high-stakes third.
Then in the final frame, Blanton struck again to put the Oilers up 3–2. The Penguins pressed hard late, but with just twelve seconds left, McGuire notched the dagger with an empty-netter.
Final horn. Buckets tossed. Fist bumps exchanged. And yes, hats handed out—OFBG Champions get the merch.
_____________
Steve Thomas (Forward): "We had chances. We had structure. We just didn’t have puck luck. Or the net moved. Definitely moved."
Steve Costantino (Forward): "We matched their pace. We matched their intensity. We just didn’t match the scoreboard."
Eric Rigsby (Forward, 1G): "Felt good to score early. Felt less good watching them score late."
Bennett Blanton (Forward, 2G): "Proud of the squad. Disciplined, focused, relentless. Told 'em before warmups: this one’s not about fun—it’s about finishing. We did both."
Bryce McGuire (Forward, 2G, including EN): "Hats feel good. That last goal felt better. Always nice to close the book while the other team’s still flipping pages."
Michael Bernard (Forward): "I told the team before the third: it’s time to finish the story. Turns out, that story ends with matching hats and a lingering echo of ‘see you in the parking lot.’”
